Women in South Korea protest on streets.
In South Korea, around the mid-late-2010s, the women of South Korea began the 4B Movement where they protested against their government for their rights as women. Here in America, American women have followed in the footsteps of the women in South Korea to protest as recent events make them question their future.
The 4B Movement protested against being involved with men, but also against their government. Their government was not allowing them equal pay, using them for their women's necessities, and telling them to have more children because of their birth rate.
At that time, South Korea’s birth rate was low, so the government made a “pink map” where it showed the number of women of reproductive age. This became controversial as it is what made most of the women furious.
In South Korea, it's important because it revolves around "the centrality of marriage," which makes an unmarried woman a social pariah.
“But for women and men in South Korea, until very recently, being a social adult — not coming of age at 18 or so but being a socially recognized adult — marriage was mandated,” Katharine Moon, a political science professor at Wellesley College, said.
Just as the women in South Korea, American women have begun to do the same things they have done to protest such as shaving their heads and wearing boyish clothes to swear men off. However, American women have taken it too far with the people they love and care about.
After the 2024 election, after Trump was elected, women began divorcing their husbands and breaking off relationships with their boyfriends, because of the election. Divorce lawyers started to see a rise of new clients following the day after the election.
The 4B Movement is a sensitive topic for all women and is starting to be acknowledged in many parts of the world.
