The presidential election this year will take place on Nov. 5. This year's candidates are Vice President Kamala Harris representing the Democratic party and former President Donald Trump representing the Republican party.

Earlier this year after the debate of current President Joe Biden and former President Trump on June 27, there were concerns for Biden's age after his performance throughout the debate, Many saying that he was “incomprehensible.” In the span of three weeks more than 30 representatives and five senators advised Biden to withdraw from the race. On July 21, 2024, Biden made a report officially stating that he was dropping out of the race for reelection.

“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” President Biden said in his official Statement.

On the same day of his statement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new democratic candidate for the election. In order for Harris’s formal nomination, she needed to secure 1,976 delegate votes before the Democratic National Convention (DNC). A virtual roll call was held in the first week of August to make sure Harris met the deadline to be on the ballot this November. On Aug. 5, 2024, she was announced as the official nominee for the Democratic party with a total of 4,567 delegate votes according to the democratic national committee.

On July 14, 2024, weeks prior to the endorsement of Harris, a presidential rally held by Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania led to an assassination attempt. The shooting left two injured, one killed, and left Trump with an ear injury from the bullet or fragments of the bullet. The shooter was identified to be 20-year old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed on the scene of the attempt.

Two days after the assassination attempt The Republican National Convention (RNC) was held at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from July 15-18, 2024. The RNC hosted speakers like Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, South Carolina senator Tim Scott and Ohio senator JD Vance, who soon became the official vice president nominee. The RNC also had entertainers like Amber Rose, Tucker Carlson and Charlie Kirk to speak out in support of Trump’s candidacy. Trump ended off the RNC with his acceptance speech for his presidential nomination

“I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America because there is no victory in winning for half of America,” former President Trump said in his acceptance speech “So tonight with fate and devotion I proudly accept your nomination for president of the United States.”

After Harris secured the spot on the ballot, the next day she announced that Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, will be her running mate. The DNC was then held days later at the United Center arena in Chicago Illinois from Aug. 19-22, 2024. The DNC hosted speakers from Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to entertainers like Oprah Winfrey and Stevie Wonder.

“America, let us show each other-and the world-who we are. And what we stand for,” Vice President Harris said in her acceptance speech. “Freedom, Opportunity,  Compassion,  Dignity, Fairness, And endless possibilities.”

On Sept. 10, 2024,  the first official presidential debate against Harris and Trump took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. After the debate reports and polls came out looking in favor of Harris giving her the lead in the race. Swing states like Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania have been reported to swing more in favor of Harris. With gaining these states it can secure the win for Harris in the election.

Talk about a potential second debate has been discussed among both Harris’s campaign and Trump’s campaign, this final debate can give voters more of a consensus of who they will be voting for this November.
