Released on March 20, “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” has received rave reviews among die-hard and new fans of the 19-year franchise.

In the game, the player is one of three to come to a deserted island as part of business-tanuki Tom Nook’s deserted island getaway package. The player becomes the Resident Representative for the island – meaning they take care of island maintenance, aesthetic, relationships, and so on. The game’s ultimate goal is expanding and creating the perfect island paradise.

The game introduced many new features not seen in prior games in the franchise, most notably Nook Miles and terraforming.

Nook Miles are a new type of in-game currency. Nook explains that it is a service that rewards the player for improving the island, completing tasks, and performing different activities. Players can exchange Nook Miles for Nook branded items, tickets to mystery island tours, and bell vouchers among many other things.

Terraforming allows players to completely redesign and transform the foundation of their island paradise. Players are able to demolish and build rivers, pathways, and cliffs, making island customization a dream. The Island Designer feature has a lot of prerequisites, however, so it will not come easy.

According to Gamespot, the “Project K” assignment requires you to “build the campsite, invite the first camper to live on your island, build three housing plots..., get three villagers to move into those houses..., [and] get your island to a three-star rating.”

Although “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” is relatively user-friendly and doesn’t require any outside help, the community has created many online forums and resources for community interaction.

Turnip Exchange, for example, is a way for players to find islands with high buying prices for turnips. Turnips are bought from a character named Daisy Mae who visits the player’s island every Sunday. The buying price for turnips the rest of the week varies depending on the day and time, though it’s all random. Turnip Exchange allows islands with high buying prices to allow other players to visit the island to sell their turnips for a profit.

Nookazon is a platform for players to buy and sell any and all items transferable in the game. From flowers to crafting recipes to villagers, players can post offers along with what they want to receive in return.

“Animal Crossing: New Horizons” has been a hit among players and for good reason. It offers brand new features for past players while also making new players feel comfortable with learning the mechanics. The community as well as the game’s overall friendly nature is bound to keep its success on the rise.
