New year, new events. Last Friday marked the beginnings of a new Associated Student Body (ASB). The 2019-20 ASB class was flushed of its seniors, replacing them with new incoming students from every class.

Although the election season itself was cut short, the selection process continued on, resulting in Kaliya Trias as the new ASB President, Vansh Mandalia as Vice President, and Camila Acosta as Senior Class President.

As ASB President, Trias’ job is not to plan individual events for the student body, but rather oversee the sub-committees in their planning.

“I want to support my fellow ASB students by being there for them and offering what knowledge I have going into my fourth year in ASB,” Trias said. “Every event is important and deserves max effort.”

Every ASB in the district is structured in a different way. In some schools, the senior class president is the most influential position. Although Kennedy’s structure has an official ASB president to run the class, the senior class president carries many responsibilities: the most important of which being planning all senior events. This includes senior luau, sunrise and sunset, and senior assembly, just to name a few.

“Some goals I have as Senior Class President are to continue to integrate student opinion into the decisions we make along with recognizing the seniors on our campus,” Acosta said. “I want to be their [the senior class] voice.”

With so many applicants and qualified individuals, the selection process included many factors and considerations. Some positions had more applicants than available, others had no applicants at all.

“My main goal through the entire process is to ensure that people are placed into positions that will help them grow as an individual,” former ASB President Alexis Aguilera said. “I honestly think next year’s ASB will be one of the most successful classes to date.”

Although the 2019-20 school year was cut short, the 2020-21 school year is set to return strong. With a brand new group of student leaders, the new school events are shaping up to look better than ever.
