On Friday, March 13, AUHSD decided to close schools as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus. However, many students at Kennedy High and across the district depend on the breakfast and lunch that is given at school, so AUHSD came together to keep offering meals to students.
Seven schools in the district are giving free meals Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. for children 18 and under. The meals are available for pick up at Kennedy, as well as Katella High, Anaheim High, Loara High, Western High, Sycamore Junior High, and Brookhurst Junior High.
Additionally, Elbows Macaroni & Cheese in Cerritos has donated dinner to all families in the greater La Palma area. These meals can be picked up from Kennedy during the same hours on Wednesdays and Fridays only.
“I hear from families that are limiting their meals per day to save money or make sure their children have enough food,” State Senator Ling Ling Chang told the Orange County Register. “The extraordinary moment calls for extraordinary responses. And we need to use every tool we have right now.”
Despite the economic and social hardships brought on by the school closures, AUHSD has continued to provide healthy meals for their students.
“We make sure they contain all 5 food groups,” Assistant Director of Food Services Tiffanie Bas said in a video posted on the AUHSD Instagram page. “We just want to take care of our community because we are a high free and reduced district.”
Online schooling has been extended through the end of the year, bringing panic to some students who don't have access to a computer at home. Luckily, AUHSD also distributed laptops and WiFi hot spots to those who needed them.
Through this unfortunate situation, the district is spreading positivity in helping students and bringing the community together.
