A company based in the Philippines called Copper Mask PH has created a trendy mask that they claim can kill viruses and bacteria, but has a huge hole in the middle of it. Copper Mask PH is advertising their masks by claiming it as a fashionable design with the intentions to set a trend.
Protective masks are made to cover and protect your nose and mouth from spreading bacteria and viruses caused by sneezing, coughing, and touching your nose or mouth after touching a surface. A mask with a huge hole in it doesn’t seem like it would do much protecting.
The mask is priced at $7.80 and has filipino celebrities promoting it on social media as well as billboards saying “it’s safer and stylish.” Copper Mask PH studies have shown the virus itself will infect then die within hours on this copper mask compared to other plastic and medical masks. A large number of supporters of the company have claimed that the benefits of this mask are outweighed by the huge design flaw which is the hole.
“Antibacterial film with infused copper strands and is effective to kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses,” Copper Mask PH said.
Having this mask around and being used is sending the wrong type of signals to people thinking it's okay to wear something of this sorts and getting upset when establishments wont let them enter and blaming that place but really its the mask fault.
The mask and its popularity became a huge problem when early this year at Makati Medical Center, a hospital in Manila’s central business district, stopped many people from wearing the copper mask and any type of mask that had or included holes or openings in them.
“MakatiMeds Infection Prevention and Control recommends the use of secure-fit face masks without valves, slits, or holes for the safety and wellness of its patients, guests, and healthcare workers while inside the hospital,” MakatiMed advisory said.
Copper Mask PH still ignored the warnings and released to the press promotion of the mask in media outlets.
