Television series “Steven Universe,” created by Rebecca Sugar in 2011, officially came to an end on Mar. 27. “Steven Universe'' created a way to introduce younger audiences to LGBTQ+ individuals and role models in a positive context.

“Steven Universe was a gateway for me to feel comfortable in my skin,” an anonymous sophomore at Kennedy High said.

Within the show, queer relationships as well as non-binary individuals were featured which caused an issue within Cartoon Network: the television station owned by Warner Brothers Entertainment (WBE). Sugar had to fight for the reputation of Steven Universe because of WBE’s fear of LGBTQ+ exposure and the response of the public. Luckily, the response to the show was enormous.

“Steven Universe'' continued into a movie named “Steven Universe the Movie” and an additional continuation called “Steven Universe Future.” The original series follows a young boy named Steven Universe discovering more about his mother and the powers he inherited from her. Crystal gems Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl help him uncover the truth and help others along the way. “Steven Universe the Movie'' takes place two years after the events of the original series. After peace has been brought to the universe, someone from Steven’s mother’s past comes for vengeance.. “Steven Universe Future '' is a continuation of Steven’s story, the movie which deals with Steven’s post-traumatic stress from the war and everything preceding it.

“Steven Universe” impacted a lot of individuals of all ages through its nine-year run-time.

“From a young age, I always thought that being bigger was looked down upon,” Cypress High senior Marc Anthony Zaldana said. “So seeing a main character who was bigger inspired me to believe that anyone could be the hero of their own story.”

After nine long years, “Steven Universe,” through its amazing story has allowed millions of young viewers to feel more comfortable with themselves. Farewell, “Steven Universe.”
