Much like other sports, the 2020 season for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) -- one of the largest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organizations in the world and the leading source for MMA entertainment -- was cancelled due to the coronavirus. However, UFC President Dana White has a plan to bring MMA back to the public.

White is confident that he will be able to bring back UFC even without fans in attendance with the help of the aptly named “Fight Island.”

After being forced to cancel UFC 249 and postpone the event until May 9, White got to work immediately in acquiring a private island where he would be able to host UFC matches.

“‘Fight Island’ is real. It’s a real thing.” White said. “The infrastructure is being built right now and that’s really going to happen. It will be on ESPN.”

Fight Island is planned to have every commodity a UFC fighter would need, ranging from housing to training facilities, and provide the entertainment fans at home have been yearning for since the cancellation of every sports season.

If White manages to set up Fight Island and run it successfully, UFC will be one of the first sports to return and fighters and fans alike are excited about the prospects.

“Dana, man, listen. If you’ve got quarters, I will stay on that island, bro,” UFC Heavyweight Greg Hardy said. “You know I’m not ashamed to move in. We can fight every couple of weeks, dude. With all seriousness, let’s run it. I’ll live on it and break my own record that I tied last year – 100 percent.”

Whether or not Fight Island is successful, the idea represents one of the few real attempts to bring back sports. Other sports may take inspiration from White’s plan and come up with a way to bring back their leagues as well.
