Say hello to the first woman general manager in Major League Baseball! On Friday, Nov 13, the Miami Marlins announced Kim Ng as their new general manager. Ng, 51, served as MLB’s Senior Vice President for nine years where she was the highest ranking Asian American woman baseball executive.
Ng also previously served as the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers assistant general manager working with the teams to make the playoffs eight times and win three World Series titles.
“On behalf of principal owner Bruce Sherman and our entire ownership group, we look forward to Kim bringing wealth of knowledge and championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins,” CEO Derek Jeter said. “Her leadership of our baseball operations team will play a major role in our path toward sustained success.”
Ng, who was brought into baseball as an intern in 1991 and spent six years in the Chicago White Sox front office, will be the highest ranking woman in baseball and the first female general manager in the four major North American men’s sports leagues.
“I entered Major League Baseball as an intern and, after decades of determination, it's an honor of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next General Manager,” Ng said in a statement.
Ng is now the fifth person to lead the Marlins baseball team and operation. With her significant role in the building of the team, she sets a great example for young girls and women all over the world who love baseball and softball.
“It's another step for women to truly make a difference in the way we are respected. Men have always had the upper hand in getting their respect in sports, but women should have just as much,” Kennedy senior Savanah Millette said. “We play almost the exact same sport and understand how the game is played. That’s why she’s finally breaking the ‘rules of society,’ and showing women can be involved in all men sports as well.”
The hard work and achievements that came along with Ng’s career in the National Pastime led to this amazing outcome.
