On Sep. 8, 2024, American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar released an announcement video revealing that he will be headlining the 59th Super Bowl Halftime Show. After a surprising and eventful year, Lamar is hoping to start out the new year with a bang.

Throughout 2024, Lamar went against Canadian rapper and singer Drake Graham releasing “Not Like Us,” “Meet the Grahams,” “Euphoria,” and “Like That” featuring Future and Metro Boomin that directly addressed Drake. After they both went back and forth, Lamar received more support after many songs, a concert, and a music video.

"So Kendrick - he's been, like, the biggest winner in rap all year long. I mean, first off, he put hip-hop back on the top of the charts after-you know, kind of a somewhat off year in 2023 for the genre," NPR music correspondent Rodney Carmichael said.

Past Halftime shows have been very popular such as Rihanna in 2023, Dr. Dre & Friends in 2022 where Kendrick performed too, or The Weeknd in 2021.

Lamar has a large catalog of songs that he could perform such as “Money Trees”, “DNA”, or the chart topper “Not Like Us”. Lamar could also bring out guests like SZA or Baby Keem for songs like “All The Stars” and “Family Ties”. Lamar could be planning to release new music after teases like the Not Like Us music video and the Instagram exclusive “Watch The Party Die”.

“I'm looking forward to watching the Halftime show,” senior Sparsh Banerjee said. “I really hope that he releases more music soon.”

For now, people around the world will have to sit down and be humble, while they wait and see what’s in store for Lamar’s Halftime performance.
