On Jan. 22, Kennedy High hosted the first ever Kennedy Open House Expo, offering an insight of what future students & families can expect as part of the Fighting Irish campus life.

Starting during 4th period, ASB spread across campus, setting up tables, posters, and decorations to create the Expo’s high spirit environment. They showed Kennedy’s spirit with tables coated in green and yellow cloths with balloons lined up along the hallways leading to the classrooms. By 5:30, Kennedy Expo had officially started.

The event featured performances from The Shamrock Regiment, Kennedy Singers, and the Blarney Stone Theatre. Kennedy High teachers and staff came together to showcase the many extracurricular activities and clubs to give an opportunity for incoming Fighting Irish students to see the diverse selection of classes available at Kennedy High.

“It’s always a good idea if you’re not 100% sure what high school you want to go to be able to come to an event like this to see what programs Kennedy has to offer,“ Assistant Principal Jeff Howe said.

The Kennedy Expo allowed students and families the chance to meet with their potential teachers and visit classrooms across on campus.

“We have various works from students and models,” Chemistry teacher Andrew Park said. “We have Anatomy, Physics, Living Earth, and Chemistry. We have something to show to the incoming freshman.”

While teachers showed off their side of campus, students also showed off their contributions.

Kennedy High students took the advertising opportunity and showcased their clubs, selling assortments of foods, beverages, and merch. There were many small business and club booths set up on campus highlighting different ways students can be involved in the Kennedy community.

“I’m at this event tonight to support my small businesses with me and my friends, called Charmistry,” senior Alexa Camilla said. “We sell car fresheners, charm bracelets, and perfume rollers.”

As students showed off their life on campus, the families of students got to take an inside look of what the Fighting Irish experience in their daily lives.

While many people know about the various classes on campus, many parents learned about the more advanced classes Kennedy has to offer, such as the IB program.

“The IB program seems to prepare a student for college more than other classes,” visiting parent Jessica Tule said. “The IB classes give a clearer perspective of college life and prepares students to go in with an open mind.”

Tule explained how she observed many people in college who came in with a closed mind, thinking they knew exactly what college was like. This mindset had a negative effect as they struggled in college. The advanced classes, however, seem to prepare students better for college life.

In addition to the IB program, parents learned more about the various Fighting Irish athletic programs.

“I learned more about the softball program and the flag football team,” visiting parent Renee Gray said.

This year’s Kennedy Expo successfully encouraged students to participate more in campus life as both future and returning students.
