NFL Off-Season Primer: Part IV

By Jakob Salao, Sports Editor

Amid the overall uncertainty that comes with the spread of the coronavirus, NFL teams have continued their off-season endeavors to improve their team through trades and free-agent signings. The football world has been turned on its head, and it may be confusing to keep track of where every player has ended up and what exactly is going on in the NFL, but there are some big moves that should be kept track of.

FREE AGENT SIGNINGS

Denver Broncos: CB A.J. Bouye (Via Jaguars), DL

Jurrell Casey (Via Titans), OG Graham Glasgow, RB Melvin Gordon, DT Shelby Harris*, P Sam Martin, TE Nick Vannett.

The Broncos went to work during the off-season, making a pair of trades to improve their defense. However, the lone signings of RB Melvin Gordon and TE Nick Vannett may not be enough to help their offense that is much in need of WRs and someone to mentor rookie QB Drew Lock.

Kansas City Chiefs: CB Antonio Hamilton, QB Chad Henne*, DT Chris Jones*, WR Demarcus Robinson*, RB Damien Williams*

If it ain't broke, don’t fix it, as they say, and the Chiefs didn’t have to do much fixing. Coming fresh off a Super Bowl win, there wasn’t much needed to do except for bringing back the players that helped bring them the championship. Although they did lose a few parts of their defense, none of it will be enough to shake the Chiefs dominant position on top.

Los Angeles Chargers: OT Bryan Bulaga, RB Austin Ekeler*, CB Chris Harris, TE Hunter Harry*, DT Linval Joseph, OG Trai Turner (Via Panthers).

The Chargers had a quiet off-season, lacking any big name trades or pickups save for resigning RB Austin Ekeler and TE Hunter Henry. Although their pickups did address many of their needs, former QB Philip River’s departure leaves uncertainty in their QB position.

Las Vegas Raiders: WR Nelson Agholor, CB Eli Apple, DT Maliek Collins, S Jeff Heath, OL Eric Kush, LB Nick Kiwiatkoski, LB Cory Littleton, QB Marcus Mariota, DE Carl Nassib, TE Jason Witten.

The Raiders eagerly signed plenty of players to bolster their defense, which was the biggest problem they needed to address. However, on offense, the signing of WR Nelson Agholor and TE Jason Witten aren’t exactly going to turn their offense around, but the addition of QB Marcus Mariota may incite QB Derek Carr to step up.

Arizona Cardinals: LB De’Vondre Campbell, RB Kenyan Drake*, WR Larry Fitzgerald*, OL Marcus Gilbert*, WR DeAndre Hopkins (Via Texans), LB Devon Kennard, DT Jordan Phillips.

In an unthinkable trade, the Cardinals were able to acquire star WR DeAndre Hopkins for David Johnson and a few draft picks. Lined up next to veteran Larry Fitzgerald, the Cardinals’ offense is set to be a big threat in the coming season.

Los Angeles Rams: OL Austin Blythe, DT Michael Brockers*, DE Leanard Floyd, DT A’Shawn Robinson, OL Andrew Whitworth*.

The Rams have left themselves in a solid position for next season, but still lack what it takes to win the Super Bowl. The loss of RB Todd Gurley only weakens a team in need of a rebuild.

San Francisco 49ers: DL Arik Armstead*, WR Travis Benjamin, C Ben Garland*, S Jimmie Ward.

There wasn’t much the 49ers needed to change, even though they just lost the Super Bowl. They were still able to make it to the biggest game of the year, so there’s no need for an overhaul. Many signings just addressed areas that they lost due to free agency, and the 49ers are still a threat for next year.

Seattle Seahawks: WR Phillip Dorsett, CB Quinton Dunbar (Via Redskins), OL B.J. Finney, TE Jacob Hollister*, DE Bruce Irvin, T Cedric Ogbuehi, TE Greg Olsen, DT Jarran Reed*.

The Seahawks haven’t rocked the Free Agency world like many other teams, but their signings are still notable. The addition of TE Greg Olsen and WR Phillip Dorsett only makes QB Russell Wilson an even scarier offensive threat. They’ve also signed DE Bruce Irvin in the possibility Jadeveon Clowney leaves, but if he doesn’t, their D-line will be a big threat
