On Wednesday, Sept. 25, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) was the company's biggest console launch ever. It was so successful that they ran out of stock within days of the launch and the console sold out in stores almost immediately.
Sony promised more inventory of the PS5 will be coming to stores for eager gamers by the end of the year. The PS5 has been one of the hottest things to buy for this holiday season, with many finding it impossible to get one.
Whether it was due to the lack of stock, online retailers crashing and not being able to handle the digital traffic, or people buying bots and using them to purchase as many units as possible to resell for profit, it has become increasingly difficult to get a PS5. Sony didn't make the PS5 available in-store this year, already making it more challenging in terms of acquisition. This meant that people would have to search the online market to try and buy the popular console as opposed to standing in line for hours.
“We want to thank gamers everywhere for making the PS5 launch our biggest console launch ever,” PlayStation tweeted. “Demand for PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year - please stay in touch with your local retailers.”
This has been one of the most recent successful launches for electronics in awhile.
"Everything is sold. Absolutely everything is sold," PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said. "I've spent much of the last year trying to be sure that we can generate enough demand for the product. And now in terms of my executive bandwidth, I'm spending a lot more time on trying to increase supply to meet that demand."
So far, many fans of the company have had many positive comments about the new console.
“So far I’m in love with this beast,” said senior Michael Elizondo. “ I don’t need a girlfriend anymore.”
The PS5’s value has been extremely high with resellers pricing it around $1000. That’s nearly double the price it's being sold at in stores. Most people won’t be able to get one for Christmas without overspending and causing disappointment in fans.
