Kennedy High’s very own Katie Torrez has officially committed to Saint Mary’s for softball and will be majoring in health science to become a clinical specialist and map hearts.
Torrez played softball for 16 years and always wanted to play collegiate softball. Her older sister played at CSU Pueblo in Colorado and set an example and motivated Torrez to keep going and achieve her dream. Oftentimes the committing process for a student-athlete is the hardest and most stressful part, for Torrez it was the opposite.
“My committing process was very fast and I was able to say yes 18 days after September. After going on a visit to the school, I fell in love and knew that’s where I should be,” Torrez said.
At Kennedy High Torrez plays second-base and shortstop. Outside of high school, she plays for Empire 18U Premier and plays middle infield, and outfield. In Torrez’s last season at Kennedy High, she had a .407 batting average, 11 RBI’s and .485 OBP.
“I'm very lucky and grateful for the past couple high school seasons. I had so much fun being on varsity all four years I was able to experience winning league, making it to CIF semifinals and making so many friends,” Torrez said.
Being a student athlete is never easy, however it’s what makes an athlete more effective and well rounded in the world after high school.
“Being a student athlete is at times very difficult to time manage but over the years I have learned a lot about myself when and where I am most productive and that has helped me be able to manage the workload.” Torrez said.
Although it is difficult to juggle both important things, Torrez makes it look easy and is taking the good habits she learned at Kennedy High to Saint Mary’s.
As softball season is starting, the end of an era for Torrez is coming fast.
“This year softball starts in February. I hope to make many memories since it’s my last season of my high school career.” Torrez said.
All the hard work and dedication she put in made everything worth it. She can now enjoy the rest of her senior year and feel satisfied that she knows where she will be once she walks off the stage at graduation. Saint Mary’s Softball is very lucky to have an amazing hard worker, can't wait to see what the future holds for Torrez.
