Four years full of classes, events, and friendships -- high school is no doubt a short ride, but definitely provides an experience of a lifetime. With the right advice and mindset, high school has the potential to be the best four years of your life! Underclassmen, here is the ultimate guide to a great high school experience.

High school is a time to take your academics seriously. A few years goes by quickly and then you’re off to college where you enter into a new life of experiences and career aspirations. High school offers challenging courses like AP, IB, and honors. By taking such classes, you will experience college rigor and possibly earn college credit that will save you money and time down the line. Advanced courses like these are strongly recommended throughout high school for future benefits and overall experience. Staying on the advanced course track will influence a great work ethic for your future to come.

“Advanced Placement classes show admissions officers that you’re ready for college level work,” Princeton reviewer Rob Franek said.

Throughout high school, ASB and other organizations coordinate a variety of events, ranging from the very beginning of the year up until the end. These organizations put in lots of work planning the events to make students’ experiences the best possible . Events range from dances to tailgates, ensuring action packed and enjoyable years. Many students push back attending these events until senior year. However, seniors today highly advise attending them all throughout high school, especially in sight of current events.

“Especially after COVID-19 and the remainder of this year being cancelled, I really regret not going to a lot of the events early on in high school,” senior Mehetabell Chen said. “If I could give any advice to underclassmen, it would be to go to all high school events. Appreciate high school while you’re in it”

To maintain healthy friendships in high school, be sure to take the time to get to know individuals at school. There are so many types of people with different interests, making you bound to find peers you’ll form friendships with. High school calls for a tight knit friend group and support system, making friends crucial in the high school experience.

High school will inevitably come with challenges like the rest of life, but it’s always important to embrace perseverance. This specific time in school is about discovering your identity and aspirations, and though it’s not an easy journey to find that answer, you’re surely destined to find it at some point! High school only comes once, make the best of it!
