American-French actor and film producer Timothée Chalamet returned to the live sketch-comedy showcase Saturday Night Live (SNL). On Jan. 25, Chalamet took the late-night stage, taking on the role of both the host and musical guest.
Chalamet hosted in 2020, season 46 episode eight, and in 2023, season 49 episode four. He then appeared again in season 46 episode 17 for a cameo when hosted by English actress Carey Mulligan in 2021. His third hosting on the show made history as Chalamet is now the second actor to act as both late-night host and musical guest in SNL’s 50 year run time.
Chalamet’s oscar nomination for his dramatic role in the film “A Complete Unknown”, a biopic of American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, had placed him at the center of entertainment news just a week before the official announcement of his hosting. Chalamet came back into the spotlight and his double-duty appearance on SNL was considered by many to be a hit.
Chalamet has been a figure in the public eye since he starred in the film “Call Me by Your Name” in 2017, but rarely has he been met with such unanimous praise. Chalamet has been met with an unexpected amount of newfound respect from those who have just discovered his talents, and even from those who have been fans of his work for years.
“He was good. They need to make him the 11th cast member,” junior Anthony Lopez said.
Viewers were impressed with his performances in the newest episode, but amusing sketches that had the most attention were “Bungee”, “AI Software”, and “Grandma’s Birthday”. Chalamet has earned the most attention for his role as a barista with a passion for stand-up comedy in the skit “New Barista Training”; clips of him saying “You weigh a latte,” the sketch character making rounds on social media.
“My favorite skit was New Barista Training," senior Isabella Lopez said. “I don’t watch SNL, it doesn’t make me laugh. But he was so funny in that skit I literally belly laughed.”
Chalamet’s musical performance was equally as entertaining, as he presented to the audience two rock renditions of songs written by the classic folk artist Bob Dylan. His set included a cover of the song “Tomorrow is a Long Time”, and a mashup of the songs “Three Angels” and “Outlaw Blues”.
Chalamet seems to have proven that he is a renaissance man as he displayed his dynamic abilities as a performer; showing that he can not only act and make the audience laugh, but is also able to put on an exciting musical performance. Chalamet’s refreshing performance has inspired optimism in the many who feel that Hollywood has been in a drought of creativity, as it seems that the charismatic, multi-faceted celebrity is back in fashion.
